Geneva - Growth in air travel accelerated in April, rising 7.5% year-on-year, compared to 2.9% in March;
The April result, however, is positively biased by the timing of Easter;
Moreover, recent developments in demand drivers suggest acceleration may not be sustainable;
On international markets, Asia Pacific airlines saw a solid rise of 6.7% in April;
But the regional economic outlook remains fragile with China decelerating and Japan showing signs of reversal;
On domestic markets, demand in China and Russia was strong enough to support near double-digit growth;
While in India growth was just 2.7%, with high inflation continuing to dampen consumer demand;
Load factors improved in April, pausing the slight decline seen during previous months;
Key indicators continue to signal growth in air travel, but have seen virtually no change over recent months;
Weakening performance of emerging markets, mostly China, has constrained the upturn in demand drivers;
But sustained momentum in advanced economies is likely to support continued growth air travel in months ahead.
