DOHA - After Morocco's phenomenal run in the Qatar 2022 World Cup and Saudi Arabia's stunning victory over Argentina, we look at how Arab teams have risen or dropped in FIFA’s new rankings, released on Thursday.
The highest-placed Arab team - Morocco - sits just outside the top ten, leapfrogging footballing giants such as Germany and two-time World Cup winners Uruguay.
Europe and South America's dominance of the sport might just be breaking.
Morocco
Ranking today: 11
Ranking before the World Cup: 22
Morocco captured billions of hearts during the World Cup after reaching the semi-final of the tournament - the first African or Arab team to do so.
Walid Regragui's well-drilled side defeated the likes of Belgium, Spain, and Portugal on their dream run until they were eventually defeated by France one game from the final.
Heroic performers Bounou (Bono), Hakimi, En Nesyri, Amrabat, Ounahi and Saiss are now household names, and the team's achievements will inspire African and Arab sides for generations.
The fans must also get a large share of the credit, as their fervor and passion during Morocco's games turned Lusail and Doha into Rabat or Casablanca.
The Atlas Lions’ exploits ensured they climbed all the way to 11 in the FIFA ranking, putting them ahead of heavyweights Germany and Uruguay.
Tunisia
Ranking today: 30
Ranking before the World Cup: 30
Tunisia’s place has not changed in the rankings, despite the team's impressive win against France - a symbolic victory against their former colonial rulers.
Tunisian striker Wahbi Khazri scored the only goal of the game to send the Tunisian fans of the Carthage Eagles into rapture. Their victory was not enough to pull them out of the group stages.
Saudi Arabia
Ranking today: 49
Ranking before the World Cup: 51
The Saudis got off to a flying start in the competition, stunning World Cup favourites and eventual winners Argentina 2-1 in front of a raucous crowd.
After Argentina took control of the first half following a Lionel Messi penalty, two Saudi goals in five minutes in the second half quickly turned the game on its head. The Green Falcons managed to hold on for a famous victory.
Saleh Al-Shehri picked up the first goal, before a goal of the tournament contender from Salem al-Dawsari shocked the South Americans, ending their 36-game unbeaten streak.
The Saudis couldn’t channel the same spirit in their other two matches against Poland and Mexico, however, and were dumped out of the group - while Argentina went on to become world champions.
Qatar
Ranking today: 60
Ranking before the World Cup: 50
Qatar dropped ten places after the World Cup, as their spirited performances were not enough to help them secure any points in a tough group with Ecuador, Senegal, and the Netherlands.
The team has still come a long way in the past decade, ever since they were announced as the 2022 World Cup hosts. Measures to improve their football infrastructure and the quality of players have reaped huge rewards and shown the world they are no longer mere cannon fodder for the top teams.
Despite their loss to Croatia in the World Cup quarter-finals, Brazil continues to lead the FIFA rankings. Tournament champions Argentina climbed to second, while finalists France round off the top three.
Japan shot into the top 20 after recording famous wins over Spain and Germany in the World Cup that knocked the Germans out of the tournament.
The next highest-ranked team from the Middle East is Iran, at 24.
Perennial African heavyweights Egypt and Algeria, who both surprisingly missed out on the World Cup, are ranked 39 and 40 respectively.
Top 20 FIFA rankings:
1. Brazil
2. Argentina
3. France
4. Belgium
5. England
6. Netherlands
7. Croatia
8. Italy
9. Portugal

11. Morocco
12. Switzerland
13. USA

Morocco make history beating Portugal to reach World Cup semi-finals

DOHA - Morocco stunned Portugal to become the first African team to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup.
Youssef En-Nesyri’s header three minutes before half-time was the only goal of a 1-0 victory that was greeted with jubilation by the massed ranks of Morocco fans in the Al Thumama Stadium.
Cristiano Ronaldo was again left out of the starting line-up but came on early in the second half for his 196th international appearance, equalling the men’s world record of Kuwait’s Badr Al-Mutawa.
But he barely made an impact and ended what will surely be his final World Cup in tears as Morocco battled with energy and skill to achieve what previous quarter-finalists Cameroon, Senegal and Ghana could not.
Portugal made only one change from the 6-1 victory over Switzerland, Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves replacing William Carvalho, while Nayef Aguerd and Noussair Mazraoui were both injured for Morocco so Jawad El Yamiq and Yahya Attiat-Allah started.
Despite swathes of empty seats – fans reported chaotic scenes outside the stadium – the Moroccan supporters in the ground made it a rousing atmosphere from the start.
Deafening whistles greeted Portugal possession, and there was an early escape for the Atlas Lions when Joao Felix’s header from a free-kick was pushed away by Bono.
En-Nesyri gave notice of his threat with a header from a corner and Felix went close again with a deflected effort that flew just over the bar but the pace of Morocco’s play and their willingness to attack in numbers gave them real impetus.
An impressive passing move led to the goal, with En-Nesyri producing a mighty leap to beat Diogo Costa to the ball and power a header into the net, causing bedlam in the stands.
Portugal almost managed a quick reply through Bruno Fernandes’ audacious over-the-shoulder volley but the ball smacked against the bar.
It took only six minutes of the second half, during which Costa did well to beat away Hakim Ziyech’s free-kick, for Portugal boss Fernando Santos to turn to Ronaldo and Manchester City’s Joao Cancelo.
Morocco were forced into a change with captain Romain Saiss unable to continue because of a troublesome hamstring problem and Achraf Dari taking his place.
Portugal probed for an opening and Goncalo Ramos, the hat-trick hero against Switzerland but largely invisible here, headed wide before Fernandes was just off target with another well-struck effort.
Felix had been Portugal’s biggest danger and he drew a brilliant one-handed save from Bono with a shot from the edge of the box, while Pepe should have scored with the final chance of the match.
Morocco were reduced to 10 men in injury time when Walid Cheddira picked up two quick yellow cards but it was a minor blip on a historic day.
Cristiano Ronaldo to leave Manchester United with immediate effect

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United with immediate effect, the Premier League club have announced.
United issued a statement on Tuesday evening announcing they had reached a mutual agreement with the player to terminate his contract.
The development comes a week after Ronaldo unsettled the club in an outspoken TV interview.
The club statement read: “Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect.
“The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future.
“Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik Ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch.”
Ronaldo, 37, rejoined United for a second spell last year but he had fallen out of favour this season under new manager Erik Ten Hag.
The Portuguese issued his own statement which read: “Following conversations with Manchester United we have mutually agreed to end our contract early.
“I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never ever change. However, it feels like the right time for me to seek a new challenge.
“I wish the team every success for the remainder of the season and for the future.”
The development means Ronaldo is now free to negotiate with other clubs. The PA news agency understands there are no restrictions on who he can play for under the terms of his departure agreement with United, nor are there any ongoing obligations for the Old Trafford outfit.
Ronaldo’s relationship with the club had appeared to become strained during the early part of the season and problems were brought to a head by last week’s interview with TV presenter and journalist Piers Morgan.
Among his comments in the programme were claims that he felt “betrayed” by United and that he had no respect for Ten Hag.
He also said that he felt people at the club were trying to force him out and that United showed a lack of empathy when his daughter was in hospital ill.
There were also wider complaints about the standard of facilities at the club as well as criticism of the owners.
When United responded by appointing lawyers to consider potential action for alleged breach of contract, it became clear a parting of the ways was likely.
It is an abrupt end to a career at United that was revived amid much fanfare in August last year.
Ronaldo had looked set to join rivals Manchester City from Juventus but a late intervention from United took him back to Old Trafford.
Ronaldo first joined United from Sporting Lisbon as a teenager in 2003. He won three Premier League titles and the Champions League before going on to even greater success with Real Madrid.
After nine years at the Bernabeu and a further three at Juve, he returned to United as a five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
He scored 18 goals in the Premier League last season but United struggled, finishing sixth in a campaign in which they were managed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Michael Carrick and Ralf Rangnick.
He made a slow start to the current campaign under new boss Ten Hag after missing their pre-season tour, starting just four Premier League games. There were further controversies as he left the ground early during a friendly and refused to come on as a substitute against Tottenham.
